Tree planting

About this time of year, we try to have some kind of family and friends gardening day, with a big breakfast. Apparently it’s farmhouse breakfast week, so that’s an excuse for lovely local sausages, bacon, eggs from the chooks, and all the extras.

Today we planted about 25 trees – oak, bird cherry, wild cherry, alder, silver birch, and rowan – in the very bottom of the garden (a space previously overrun with brambles). Having done this, we maintain the space by mowing and cutting out brambles until ultimately the trees win and the brambles die back.

We also used the available manpower to clear away the mess where a couple of makeshift sheds had fallen down in the gales.

First breakfast – who wants a cup of tea?

Al tries to look like he planted a tree one-handed, but really Jethro did it – Alaric is just posing!SAMSUNG DIGITAL CAMERA

Then, as it was raining and sleeting and blowing we retired to the house for tea, flapjack and Christmas cake.

Thanks to everyone for helping – those trees will look so good in a year or two.
